Charles was born to William and Ellen Nicholls whilst William was stationed in Fort St George in India.
But apart from his Baptism certificate there is no further information about what happened to him. Did he remain in India? Did he return to England? Did he even survive infancy?

James was my great grandfather's brother and according to family legend:
"the birthdate of James is unknown, but he went to Australia when he was about 20 years old ...and was never heard of after that"!Research by a genealogist in Australia has traced his arrival in the port of Mackay, Queensland in 1886. But after that nothing is certain.
Trying to find... descendants of James and Romanie Willis
James was landlord of The Red Lion in Charlton Green, Dover from 1897 until his early death in 1916. Romanie was his second wife and was born in Ostende, Belgium.
They had three children:
Maurice [1907-1981], Harold [1909-1975] and Dorothy [1915-1970].
If you have any further information about these or their descendents plese get in touch.
The Barham Village website states that during the 1750s Henry Elgar (the 3 x great-uncle of the composer Sir Edward Elgar) - a Yeoman and farmer at Breach, lived in the Parish of Barham.
Sir Edward Elgar [1857-1934] wrote such classic English music as 'Enigma Variation', 'Pomp & Circumstance Marches' (Land of Hope & Glory) and 'The Dream of Gerontius', to name but a few.
There are two strands of Elgar families in The Willis Tree: one traced as far back as Henry Elgar [b1692] and Susannah Elgar [b1751] and I'd love to be able to trace whether either of them are linked to Edward Elgar.
These photos were amongst images handed down through my dad's family - but the identity of the woman is as yet unknown!
Do you recognise her? If you do, let me me know!
This image was sent to my by Russell Meyers, who received it from a cousin of his mother.
He says, "I have received a photo and have no idea who it is.
The lady looks like an Arnold, yet the gentleman looks like a Rogers."
If you recognise either/both people please get in touch.
This photograph - of a young gentlemen with a young lady on either side is simply marked on the back:
'Lady & Gent together. Cowen'
As you can tell from the edge of the image, the studio is that of 'Willis' in Maison Dieu Road, Dover.
My suspicion is that this is a photograph taken by James Willis, who later went to on to become landlord of the Red Lion pub in Charlton, Dover.
In the 1891 Census, the 16-year-old James is listed as a 'Photographer'...
